Can you think of any significant shoemaking processes missing from this outline?

The Outline

There are definitely different ways to call all these process, as well as different ways of separating them from each other and ordering them. For now, I’m most interested in thinking of anything I’m just plain missing.

One of the things I keep hearing from solo shoemakers is just how many different things you have to do to end up with a finished pair of shoes. Each one is a new skill to learn, and then to refine, forever. I’m just new at this, but I’m starting to see what they mean!

  • Orthopedic Diagnosis
  • Orthopedic Prescription
  • Last Modification as a category covering build-up and shape-down
  • Top Turning
  • Binding (closing by hand)
  • Insole Carving to cover Feathering, Channeling, and Holing
  • Soaking Uppers before lasting
