I have mostly done soles with additional methods of attachment like stitching pegs nails so hard to say. the cbb maker I learned from (and as far as I know nearly all of them) don’t use a press but again doesn’t matter much if you’re stitching and pegging. Except edge gaping but I do use a welt roller and for the heel stacks compress the edges with a Whitcher plier in addition to the hammering. I’m not too familiar with cemented only. I did one glued rubber sole that’s holding up for a few months. but if I were doing a glue only layer and expecting some wear I would listed to the people who do a lot of that and many of them use presses.
Ah okay, that makes sense. I actually haven’t done a sole yet that has been mechanically fastened. All of my moccasin footwear has Vibram 7500 midsoles, and vibram outsoles tend to bond really went to that with Barge and proper surface prep. I haven’t had any delamination issues so far.
As a quick update, I was searching for an inner rasp to deal with the wooden pegs. I would love to be able to get this one, but cost to me ends up being ~$200. Did not want to drop that much on a very specific tool right now. After some searching, I found this inner rasp on AliExpress. Cost to me was ~$35. Hard to argue with that. Hopefully it turns out to not be a waste of money. Will update once I have it in hand.
Otherwise, test boot turned out nicely. Learned a lot. The fudge wheel made such a huge difference.
Insoles for the real pair are carved, holdfasts are carved and holed, and the heel counters are drying at the moment. Things are going much better now that I had a practice run.
I grabbed one of those a month or two ago. It definitely gets the job done. Worth the money for sure.
Oh cool, good to know. Any complaints about the tool?
I have only briefly played with it so far, but it seems promising. I would probably have shaped the angles a little different, but I may try bending it
I noticed in an old video last week that Kazuma Nishimura made a float by heating up a cheap rasp with a torch and just bending a few inches of the tip. IIRC, he rapped the rest of the rasp in tape.
