My latest rescue project, a broken cobblers peg rasp

I was searching eBay for “cobblers tools” as all of us are known to do once in a while. Well lo and behold pops up an adjustable peg rasp. However, it has a broken ear

Well I made a couple of offers and it became mine.
It had a nail holding the head on as a rivet, and of course the broken ear.

I removed the nail “rivet” and dropped the head and handle into some evaporust over night. After 20’sh hours it was spotless. I can now see its cast steel as it’s stamped on the side.
Thought about tig welding it but decided to braze it.
After brazing and two new rivets from 1/8” 6010 and some trial fitting before setting the heads on the new rivets, it works great.
Now I just need to sharpen the file head.

Interesting. Think it was designed to be mounted on top of a pole of some kind?

I have seen them mounted in regular wood handle or on a post mount. I first saw it at the Polk boot shop in Mason Tx. The tilting head works quite well reaching up into boots to get the shank pegs. Lisa sells a modern version.

I found one other before that was in good shape. I figured I would attempt to salvage this one.

Nice photo of the one from DW’s workbench. Here’s a close up of his exact set up. My guess is he found one like you did and then sent it off to Dick Anderson to mount it (based on the paint color hereafter refered to as

“Dick Anderson blue” lol. Best wishes for the project.

Are you currently in possession of this piece? DW’s post mount rasp.
Me and Dick were just talking about it yesterday, he can’t remember how he did it.
Dick Anderson did make the base for DW’s.

Looks like he started with a piece of pipe. Put a flange on the bottom. Milled a top. Drilled a hole and inserted tool in the top. Held tight by 8 set screws. Painted with proprietary color lol.

So it is definitely a round hole and not a square hole?
He has been racking his brain trying to figure out how he made it.
If I were to put you in contact with him, would you be willing to send him detailed pictures of it?
I think it may just be a modified head from his lasting jack.

If you ever get one of his lasting stands it means everything around it has to match that shade of blue. Curtains, major appliances, toilet paper, etc…

I can agree with 44, I have a stand up inseaming jack and have a last puller and peg float stand on order.

Thank you 44 for sending those photos to him. I need to get this peg float on the way to him so he can size the mortise accordingly.

Does your float happen to say 55 on the tang inside the stand or under the rasp head?

He is going to attempt to make the socket for mine sit on top of a lasting jack so it’s a dual purpose tool. Get your stuff from Dick while he’s still around and working!

I’ll bet there is a color that matches somewhere out there.
I actually like rustoleum ink blue myself.

I got a call from Dick yesterday. My combo lasting stand/ peg float stand is ready. Waiting on it to ship with my last puller from him.

I also found a set of Berg 501 large pliers!
Now a set of Christiansen bulldogs will just about round out what I would like for my lasting/crimping setup.
